Speaking Your Truth

Last month, I announced the start of my “12 Steps for Self-Care” series. Each month, I’ll be discussing a unique theme designed to help you cultivate long-term self-care habits. Self-care is an ongoing practice that I urge you to embrace as you work toward becoming the best version of yourself.

This month’s topic is a simple yet essential self-care tip we often overlook: Saying EXACTLY what you mean.

Many of us have undoubtedly found ourselves in situations where the lack of clarity in someone's communication left us feeling frustrated. Perhaps a loved one wasn’t being clear on what they were feeling, and it led to a downward spiral of miscommunication. Or maybe you promised a friend you’d make an effort to spend more time with them while knowing you were upset with them about something and would likely break that promise. While your words may have sounded reassuring to them, you know the intention behind them was not entirely genuine.

It’s important to remember that our words originate as thoughts. When we speak them, it breathes life into their existence. The words we choose can shape our life experiences, our relationships, and cause vibrations that resonate within our universe that can have a lasting impact. In the realm of energy medicine, we understand that our words are not just a means of communication; they are vessels of energy.

So when we speak negatively, or there’s negativity behind our intention, our energetic frequency takes a downward turn. It creates a constriction within ourselves, like a self-imposed barrier, that affects the flow of our own energy and hinders the natural rhythm of our life's vibrations. When we consistently vocalize words rooted in a negative mindset, we also inadvertently attract experiences that mirror that energy.

When we choose to speak positively, whether to ourselves or others, our worldly experience tends to vibrate at a higher frequency. This echoes the concept of affirmations – the repetition of positive intentions until they manifest in our lives.

We need to be mindful that language is not just confined to verbal expression; it extends to our internal dialogue as well. The words we speak and even those we keep to ourselves wield immense influence on our physiology. You may notice how phrases like "I am stuck," "no support," or "not good enough" can contract the body and impede the flow of energy like a self-inflicted dam.

So, if you embrace positive thoughts about yourself and make a conscientious effort to think more positively, your life will start to promote relaxation and allow a free flow of energy, thus breaking the dam and letting energy flow naturally.

A great way to accomplish this is to keep a gratitude journal. Gratitude journals are powerful tools that help your internal dialogue focus on the positive, which will also enhance your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

How Is Saying Exactly What I Mean a Form of Self-Care?

When you learn to be honest with your words and start saying exactly what you mean, you’re prioritizing yourself, which is a huge step in Self-Care! You’re making a conscious effort to honor your authenticity and nurture your own well-being through open and truthful communication. Being able to communicate your needs and desires can also help you understand your limits, which allows you to set clear boundaries so that your emotional and physical well-being are prioritized.

How Do I Start?

Try to get comfortable with self-reflecting to better understand your thoughts and feelings. Prioritize honesty with yourself, acknowledging your own emotions and intentions before expressing them to others. You can start small by incorporating this practice into everyday conversations and gradually build your comfort level in articulating your thoughts more openly. Don’t be afraid to use ‘I’ statements to help you take ownership of what you are feeling and when you’re expressing your needs.

There is a wonderful book called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I absolutely adore this book and its many words of wisdom so much that I’ll often share copies of it with my clients. Its four core principles are meant to resonate with anyone. Whatever walk of life you’re from, no matter who you are or what you’ve done, this book is for EVERYONE.

One of its principle lessons talks about how to be impeccable with your word through four simple steps:

  1. Speak with integrity.

  2. Say only what you mean.

  3. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.

  4. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

If you practice what I’ve discussed with these four steps in mind, I am confident that you are not only well-prepared but also ready to uncover a newfound confidence in articulating your true thoughts and intentions that will be vital to your Self-care success.

May your words be infused with the positive energy of truth and love, creating a ripple effect that enhances both your life and the lives of those you encounter.

Stay tuned for next month as I teach you “Don’t Be a People Pleaser” as the next step in the 12 Steps of Self-Care.
